Sowers Sow Seed!

Luke 8:5 A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. 6 And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. 7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. 8 And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Some old, half-crazy dude came to visit the church I worked with in Riverside, CA. He was a tract-passer-outer. That's what he did. He went from church to church for a love offering. He would have that church order 10,000 gospel tracts and then he would take someone like me out every day for a few hours to malls and other population centers to get these tracts passed out.

If you do the math, 10,000 divided by 2 is 5,000 per person, passing out the tracts for five days, that's 1,000 per person per day. We probably sowed this seed for about 3 hours each day. So, that's 333 tracts per hour. About 6 per minute, one every ten seconds! We weren't letting any grass grow under our feet (pun intended).

Seed was falling everywhere. I didn't agree with the way we did it, I was just obedient and doing my job. We placed tracts in open car windows, in the back of pick-ups, under windshield wipers and various other places. When I questioned his methods, he told me, "he that soweth sparingly shall also reap sparingly, but he that soweth bountifully shall also reap bountifully." Well, how could I argue with that? Perhaps some of that seed would fall on good ground.

I contrast this brother's zeal with my sloth when it comes to sowing seed. If the seed is still in the barn, it will do no good whatsoever. Good on him, shame on me!

Sowers sow seed! It doesn't matter if the ground is offended by the offering of the seed. He doesn't concern himself with the local authority's take on where seed should fall and where it is prohibited. He could care less if other seed sowers approve of his sowing or not. He just sows seed, hoping for some type of harvest in due season.

If you are a Christian, guess what? You are to be a seed sower. Make all the excuses you want, try to wiggle your way out of your responsibility, deny that you have the seed sowing gift, but you are commanded by your Lord to sow the seed of the Word of God.

Grab a handful of tracts and start passing them out. Plant, water and God will give the increase because He has promised that His Word would not return to Him void.

The old fellow, could it had been Gordy Guysinger? Ex-navy who gave his military pay to buy tracts?

Wow, it has been so long ago, I just can't remember, but it could have been him.
