Open Graves

Mat 27:50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. 51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; 52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, 53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

Today is Good Friday. There is an ongoing debate as to whether the Lord gave Himself for us on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. I personally ascribe to Thursday. The fact remains that He did indeed die as a sacrifice for sin.

So significant was the death of our Lord, so violent was the earthquake that accompanied His final cry, that the temple veil ripped from top to bottom and many of the local graves cracked open, exposing dead bodies. I wonder what the Jerusalem Post had to say about that in its next edition?

The swollen city must have been all a buzz considering recent events; Passover, 2 Sabbaths, the crucifixion of the King of the Jews and a couple of thieves and the release of the insurrectionist, Barabbas. Now this, people's loved ones, long dead and buried, have their decayed bodies exposed to the elements for three days.

But after the resurrection of Jesus, unusual as that was, these decayed bodies of believers regenerate and reunite with their departed spirits. They get up and go home! Imagine a knock on your front door and its Grandpa who passed back in the 48 BC!

Well, glory be! That amazing event was a precursor to a great day coming. Our believing loved one's graves are going to open up someday also. And just before we are called up in the rapture, they will receive their wake up call first.

The death and resurrection of Jesus was so powerful that it shakes our world even today, in life, in death and in resurrection.

But, you have to be a saint to get in on this. Verse 52 says, "And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose."

Trust Christ as Savior, call on Him today, confessing your sins and you will one day get in on a grave opening.
